SHOWBIZ: Bloomsday in Melbourne

Bloomsday in Melbourne presents Love’s Old Sweet Song Concert, an Irish variety concert, on Sunday, October 8 from 5pm- 7pm at the Hawthorn Arts Centre.
The evening of comedy and song featuring James Joyce’s favourite and entertaining songs will celebrate the 100th anniversary of his famous musical novel Ulysses.
It is said that audiences don’t need to know anything about James Joyce to enjoy an entertaining evening.
Hear the mythologised story of how Joyce might have been the next John McCormack had he not fluffed a sight reading test.
This was literature’s gain and he lost no opportunities to parade his love of music of all kinds in his fiction.
Bawdy ballads, the sacred and the sacrilegious and opera to Music Hall. He was not averse to musical burlesque either! All will be revealed at the Love’s Old Sweet Song Concert.
Contributing to the James Joyce songbook will be the Tatty Tenors, a comedy trio (and maestro) from Brisbane, who sing for the fun and joy of it and are veterans of Melbourne and Dublin Bloomsdays.
Performance details: Saturday October 8 from 5 pm to 7pm
Venue: Hawthorn Arts Centre 360 Burwood Road, Hawthorn
